Today Qualcomm officially released SoC chip designed for PC platform: Snapdragon 8CX Gen 3. The product, which can be used in laptops and tablets, will be manufactured by Samsung Electronics with a 5nm process. Officials say the chip is the first 5nm chip for Windows.
The CPU part of the chip has four 3.0 GHz large cores and four 2.4GHz small cores, totaling up to 14MB cache and around 15W TDP.
In terms of performance, compared with the second generation of Snapdragon 8CX Gen 2, snapdragon 8CX Gen 3 has improved CPU performance by 85%, GPU performance by 60% and single-thread performance by 40%. In addition, qualcomm says the product delivers 60 percent more performance per watt than comparable chips on x86 platforms. Qualcomm did not say who it was comparing it to, but said the battery life of devices with the new chips would be significantly improved. The chip’s AI computing power has also improved, exceeding 29 TOPs.
Qualcomm also said that the GPU part of the chip is 40% more efficient; Work closely with Adobe to satisfy applications such as PhotoShop.
The Snapdragon 8CX Gen 3 chip is powered by a new Spectra ISP image processing unit that provides enhanced auto-focus capabilities for video conferencing, as well as enhanced auto-white balance and auto-exposure capabilities. In audio, this chip can provide better noise reduction and echo cancellation capabilities for video calls and video conferences.
For connectivity, the Snapdragon 8CX Gen 3 supports X65, X55 and X62 basebands with download speeds of 10 Gbps, 7.5 Gbps and 4.4 Gbps, respectively. The chip features Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 technology and supports Wi-Fi 6E with a 3.6Gbps connection speed.
For video, the device is compatible with 4K 120fps HDR video playback, supports 4K HDR video recording, and supports up to four cameras.
The Snapdragon 8CX Gen 3 has a separate security unit (SPU) built on Microsoft Pluton architecture that can store sensitive data such as encryption keys. Added the memory encryption function to further improve platform security.
Qualcomm also announced a new Snapdragon 7C Plus Gen 3 chip (7C + Gen 3). The product uses a 6nm process to improve CPU performance by 60% and GPU performance by 70%. The chip works on entry-level Windows PCS as well as Chromebooks. The chip also supports Snapdragon X53 baseband for 5G communication capabilities. The chip features FastConnect 6700 technology and a Wi-Fi 6/6E connection speed of 2.9 Gbps.
