Qualcomm recently introduced a new variant of the Snapdragon 888 series of chips, called Snapdragon 888+ 5G with improved AI processing capabilities. Now, attention is on the company’s next-generation chipset, which is rumored to be called Snapdragon 895 or Snapdragon 898, with model number SM8450.
Today, a source from the famous leaker Digital Chat Station said, samples of the new chipset codenamed sm8450 showed that the performance gain was approximately 20% compared to the current generation, but it was not specified whether the number refers to the Snapdragon 888 or the Snapdragon 888 +.
Although the number represents a considerable jump, the leaker did not detail whether the gain was obtained in tests of single or multiple cores (which represents CPU improvement ), increase in graphics processing (GPU), and artificial intelligence (AI), or another area.
Designed now in 4 nanometers with Samsung technology instead of 5 nanometers, the sm8450 is expected to be the successor to the Snapdragon 888 and is likely to be called the Snapdragon 898.
So far, rumor has it that the chip will feature eight Kryo 780 cores, with one core likely based on Cortex-X2 at 3.09GHz, another three based on Cortex-A710 at 2.4GHz, and another four based on Cortex- A510 with up to 1.8 GHz.
The single-core of the Snapdragon 888, for comparison purposes, is a Kryo 680 with a maximum clock rate of 2.84 GHz based on the Cortex-X1. With the new, more powerful core, it’s possible that the 20% performance is CPU-related.
In addition to high processing power, the future Snapdragon 898 is expected to gain improvements in artificial intelligence, energy efficiency, and image processing to lead the high-end Android cellphone market, being presented at the traditional Snapdragon Summit at the beginning of next December.
