MediaTek wants to come out ahead with the next generation of mobile processors manufacturing processes, according to the latest rumors. Chinese sources say the company may be the first of all to make an SoC made in a 4nm lithography and, not only that, it would even have orders placed by cellphone manufacturers to use MediaTek’s first 4nm SoC that is not yet ready.
Famous Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station reported yesterday that mass production of the 4nm chipset is expected to begin in Q4 2021 or Q1 2022, giving a very wide window to see the first Dimensity processors manufactured at 4nm – if MediaTek chooses to keep the traditional name of its line for these new products.
Still, according to unofficial information, MediaTek would be facing a heavy thud in its budget to get ahead in the generation of 4nm. Rumors say that the company has secured the manufacturing agreement with TSMC and that it will pay more than double for each unit manufactured in 4nm. While chips made in 5nm have cost between $30 to $35 per unit, the new generation would be costing around $80.
Among the companies that would have already placed orders for MediaTek’s first 4nm SoC are Oppo, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Samsung. They are well-known companies and, especially Xiaomi and Samsung, should add an expressive volume of Smartphone units to offset the investment in the new chipset.
