Devices running on the Android operating system are commonly targeted by hackers looking to exploit vulnerabilities in the system. While Android developers have done a pretty good job at coming up with robust security measures in the latest versions of the operating system, a lot needs to be done to guarantee privacy and security of Android devices.
Also, we shouldn’t forget that the hacker community is also getting efficient in coming up with more creative ways to exploit vulnerabilities in the system. The attacks are getting more complex and effective as time goes by. However, most of these attempts can be thwarted with the right countermeasures. Here are a few tips on how to secure your Android device.
Use a Secure Lock Screen
When it comes to keeping your Android smartphone secure, the lock screen is your first line of defense. Always make sure that you are using a lock screen at all times. There are several options to choose from including screen lock PIN, pattern lock, and more recently, fingerprint lock and other advanced options. Go to Settings > Security > Screen Lock to set up screen lock.
Use an Android VPN
A VPN helps you create a secure, encrypted connection every time you access the internet to keep prying eyes, including would-be hackers, from seeing what you are up to online. Downloading a Virtual Private Network is one of the most effective ways to guarantee privacy and security online. A VPN tunnels your internet traffic through an encrypted connection to keep you safe online.
Don’t Install Apps from Unknown Sources
Google offers users an option to install apps from third-party app sources. To do that, you have to enable ‘Unknown Sources.’ Once you enable this setting, you will be able to install applications that are not on the Google Play Store in your device. This is not a good idea because third-party app banks are full of infected APKs that will infect your device with malware and viruses.
Activate ‘Find My Phone’ Feature
The Find My Phone feature on Android smartphones allows you to track your phone if you misplace it or lose it due to theft. If you have enabled this feature, you might be able to get your phone back if is stolen or in the least, remotely reset it to erase any sensitive data on it. Go to Settings > Google > Security > Find My Phone to activate this feature.
Being the most popular mobile operating system, Android has its fair share of problems. One of them is security. With all the sensitive information that we store on our smartphones, device security has never been more important. Use these tips to keep your Android device secure at all times.
