At the beginning of August 2020, ZTE created the event by announcing the imminent arrival of a new smartphone equipped with a selfie sensor under the screen, a world first. As promised, on Tuesday, September 1, the company officially unveils the ZTE Axon 20 5G, its first 5G compatible smartphone equipped with a selfie sensor under the screen. Apart from this unique selling point, this Smartphone offers decent equipment, including a 90 Hz OLED display.
In detail, the display of the Axon 20 5G is quite an achievement by ZTE. In addition to hiding the front camera, it also hides a speaker and an ambient light sensor, so that the smartphone reduces the top frame as much as possible in order to offer the “all-screen” experience. Returning to the topic of the speaker, the Axon 20 screen vibrates to emit sound, for example in a call. And by the way, being OLED, the panel also integrates the fingerprint sensor.
ZTE explains that in order to hide the camera under the screen, it has used a “special” OLED panel, which increases its transparency and allows light to pass through, but without the camera being seen with the naked eye. To achieve good image quality, ZTE mentions that it makes use of algorithms and “special pixel arrangement”. This software-based method is similar to what OPPO introduced a few months ago.
In more general aspects, a 6.92-inch diagonal with FullHD + resolution, a 90 Hz refresh rate, and a 20.5: 9 aspect ratio, are the characteristics of the Axon 20 5G screen.
Regarding everything else, the ZTE Axon 5G is just another upper-middle-range smartphone, and that’s not a bad thing. Its power comes from the Snapdragon 765G, assisted by 6 or 8GB of RAM, and 128 or 256GB of storage, with Android 10 with MiFavor 10.5 layer in charge of all tasks. 5G connectivity is also run by Qualcomm’s dragon heart.
On the rear of the Axon 20 5G is a quad-camera array: 64MP for the main role, 8MP for ultra-wide-angle, 2MP for macro, and 2MP for depth. At the front, invisible, a 32MP sensor takes over the selfies. Finally, a 4,220mAh battery with 30W Quick Charge 4+ fast charge is in charge of the autonomy. With this charging speed, ZTE ensures 60% capacity with just 30 minutes of connection to the electrical current.
The ZTE Axon 20 5G has been presented in China, its home market, available in black, blue, rose gold, and purple. It begins at 2198 yuan ($321) for the bottom variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and goes as much as 2498 yuan ($365) for the 8GB/128GB variant and 2798 yuan ($408) for the 8GB/256GB variant.
The delivery of the first under-screen camera phone starts on September 10th. So far, the manufacturer has not commented on a possible international launch.
