In 2019 there seemed to be little time for the diffusion of under-screen cameras: both Oppo and Xiaomi had presented their working prototypes, giving way to believe that this solution was now ready for marketing. The first step back came from Oppo, which has not integrated an under-screen selfie-shooter on its new top of the range Oppo Find X2. The second comes from Xiaomi vice president Lu Weibing, who said
Lu Weibing explained what are the reasons that make it still difficult to market a smartphone with an integrated camera below the display on board. One of the reasons comes from the nature of the new generation displays: they are panels with high resolution and therefore with high pixel density (very high PPI).
This means that the amount of light that passes through the display is very small, and very small and also the one that manages to reach the photographic sensor. If we add to this that even sensors of this type are in themselves less sensitive than these traditional ones, it is easy to realize how obtaining a good photo is difficult if not impossible.
This is nothing new: even in the prototypes, the quality of the photos taken with the under-screen sensor was significantly lower than that of a traditional smartphone. Those who thought that the problem could be solved in a few months are now faced with a bitter truth.
Therefore, there is still no time for totally borderless displays: traditional solutions will still set the law in the coming months. Which? Especially the notches, in all shapes and sizes, but also the pop-up retractable cameras.
Xiaomi, for example, has patented a pop-up camera that integrates seven sensors, freeing both the front and rear surfaces of the smartphone. Could this be the definitive solution? Hard to say: for now the under-screen is only put on stand-by.
