A few months ago, Huawei Vice President Hu Houkun revealed that the Chinese manufacturer’s first 5G smartphones will be launched in mid-2019. These smartphones will be equipped with Kirin 980 chips, though However, using a completely new modem chip with 5G support.
According to a Reuters report, recently, Huawei has officially launched its 5G modem chip. This modem chip, called Balong 5000, is confirmed by Huawei to be the strongest in the world today. How strong, however, we still don’t know.
Richard Yu, head of Huawei’s customer division, said during the Beijing launch: “This is the first 5G modem chip in the world that can support both 5G NSA network architectures and SA simultaneously. “. Therefore, 5000 can support 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks. SA network architecture (independent) is based on the construction of new base stations, using a completely new infrastructure. Meanwhile, NSA network architecture (not independent) is based on the use of existing 4G infrastructure.
Qualcomm’s 5G Snapdragon X50 LTE modem chip can reach a maximum data download speed of 5Gb / s, does not support SA and FDD standards. Meanwhile, Balong 5000 is the first modem chip that can achieve 6.5Gb / s download speed with high bandwidth and extended band support in China. Simply put, Huawei’s 5G Balong 5000 modem chip can deliver 10 times the speed of 4G LTE experience.
However, Huawei has no intention of selling these 5G modem chips to other manufacturers, to compete with Intel or Qualcomm. 5G Balong 5000 chips will only be used in Huawei devices, promising to be integrated on the first 5G smartphone launched in mid-2019.
