Nubia’s feature packed Z17 Lite represents incredible value for money. Despite a mediocre camera and polarizing software experience, the Nubia Z17 Lite is a premium phone in an affordable package.
Design & Appearnace
There’s no denying that the Z17 Lite is an elegant looking device. The matte black body and gold trim of our review unit look sleek, which is an achievement in itself as the phone verges on phablet territory at 5.5 inches. The matte black body does look great but is slippy and susceptible to fingerprint marks. If you choose to buy the Z17 Lite, you’ll want a case. Bezel-less displays are gradually showing up on more phones, and while they may seem like a gimmick, the edge-to-edge screen on the Z17 Lite is impressive. The colors are immaculate and really seem to pop. It was surprising just how much positive impact the bezel-less display had on landscape video too.
Hardware
The Nubia Z17 Lite is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 653. This mid-range processor has 4 Cortex A72 and 4 Cortex A53 processor cores clocked at up to 1.95 GHz . After the so-called big. LITTLE architecture , the cores divide again into two clusters, a power, and an energy-saving cluster. The goal of this “heterogeneous computing architecture” is a more efficient distribution of power. The storage equipment is abundant and amounts to 6GB LPDDR3 memory and a 64GB eMMC5.1 flash memory. A memory expansion by means of MicroSD memory card is not provided. The graphics processor of the system-on-chip is an Adreno 510 GPU.
Camera & Battery
On the back there is a dual camera: This consists of two Sony IMX258 sensors with 13 megapixels each. Both have an f / 2.2 large aperture, but only the main sensor picks up a color. The secondary sensor only shoots monochrome photos. Thanks to Nubia’s NeoVision 7.0 software, the information from both cameras will be combined to create a better photo. The cameras are supported by dual-tone flash and electronic image stabilization . The pictures can be seen in good light and provide natural colors and a good sharpness. Focus and shutter speed are not negatively noticeable in HDR mode. Videos are possible at 4K / 30FPS or 1080P / 60FPS. In the front camera works a 16 megapixel Samsung sensor with f / 2.0 aperture and makes really outstanding shots. Sharpness and details come in part to my OnePlus 5T ran, which costs just twice as much.
Thanks to the good software optimization, the 3,200 mAh battery lasts for a full 7 hours and 47 minutes at half brightness despite the not very energy-saving processor.
Other Features
In terms of connectivity, the Z17 Lite does almost everything right. Negative fall only the dual SIM slot (no memory expansion) and, as already mentioned, the non-existing jack connection. Otherwise, you will find everything you would want as a smartphone enthusiast: fast Wi-Fi AC, good GPS support, USB-C and Bluetooth 4.2. The Z17 Lite runs on Android Nougat 7.1.1 with a Nubia UI overlay builder in version 5.0 and the security patches date from April 2017.
Conclusion
The Nubia Z17 Lite is a successful mid-range smartphone that sets itself apart from many competing models in the same price range. To criticize there is on this smartphone quite a little, it convinces above all by an appealing design, including good build quality, an almost borderless display, a good everyday performance, a convincing camera equipment, and a good overall battery life.
