The Samsung officially unveiled its plans for its first foldable phone Samsung Developer Conference Conference (SDC) 2018. The device name was not revealed at the event, but Samsung revealed that the flexible phone features Infinity Flex Display.
The folding mechanism of the Infinity Flex screen will allow users to use it both as a tablet and as a smartphone. Samsung also confirmed that One UI, a custom version of the Experience UI, will come pre-installed on its smartphone’s folding.
Since the event was not specific to Infinity Flex, the South Korean tech giant did not show any real device on the SDC 2018. So instead of revealing the Infinity Flex screen itself, the company presented a flexible OLED panel. The OLED panel can be folded vertically and, when opened, offers a larger viewing area of 7.29 inches.
When the device is folded, there is an external 4.58-inch display that will provide a regular smartphone experience that will allow users to use all applications without opening the device in tablet mode. When the device unfolds, One UI cleverly remembers the apps that have already been opened and transforms them neatly into tablet mode.
One UI has been developed by Samsung in collaboration with Google and Android developers. One UI has a very simple look and all the important features are placed at the bottom of the screen, making it easy to operate the device with one hand. One UI can keep three applications running at the same time.
According to information, the company plans to begin mass production of the device components this month. Because there are technical difficulties in making the Infinity Flex Display, it may not be easy to produce the foldable phone in bulk. The Infinity Flex screen is not made of glass but has an advanced composite polymer that is not only flexible but also very durable.
Surely the foldable phone will open and close it endlessly, which can damage the folding mechanism and the internal components. Therefore, Samsung uses a collapsible sticker to snap all internal components under the flexible screen.
The company from South Korea has reduced the thickness of Flex panels by 45% using a new polarizer, coating layer, and substrates. This will allow Samsung‘s first foldable phone to bring a slim profile. Finally, let’s note that the company did not announce details about the launch of the retractable Galaxy phone.
