If the batteries have not seen major changes in these years, the same can not be said for charging standards, more and more powerful and efficient. In the case of Qualcomm, the most recent one responds to the name of Quick Charge 4.0+, a standard that, however, has not spread much for not well-reasoned reasons. But in 2019 will come news worthy of note, given that the same Qualcomm announced the Quick Charge 5.0 (name not yet confirmed): this is what will change compared to now.
If you look at the current mobile landscape, there are several rather effective standards. Just think of the OPPO Super VOOC, capable of 100% charging the Find X battery in just 35 minutes. Or the Huawei SuperCharge 2.0, with which to supply the capacious 4200mAh battery of Mate 20 Pro in just over an hour. However, these are proprietary technologies that can only be found on some of the devices of their respective production companies.
On the contrary, Qualcomm’s innovations are more relevant on a global scale, since they concern multiple phones with Snapdragon chipsets. If the current QC 4.0+ stops at 18W, the new Quick Charge 5.0 will go further, reaching the 32W, in order to reduce the charging time. Qualcomm has specified that this will be possible through the Triple Charge system, thanks to which it does not exceed the thermal limits.
This will significantly increase the speed of recharging the battery compared to previous generations of Quick Charge. In theory, using QC 5.0, it will be possible to charge a smartphone with a 3000mAh battery in less than half an hour. In addition, on the slides, you can see mentions of support for fast wireless charging 15W.
It is expected that the Qualcomm Quick Charge 5.0 technology will support the next top-end chipset of the company – Snapdragon 855. This means that we will be able to test the new product already in the first flagships of 2019.
