Xiaomi’s latest smartphone in its ultra-affordable segment, the Redmi 6A, was announced last month. One of the most interesting aspects of this handset was a never-seen-before MediaTek Helio A22 SoC at its core. Taiwanese semiconductor maker MediaTek has now gone ahead and detailed the features of its latest entry-level smartphone system-on-a-chip.
The MediaTek Helio A22 is a quad-core processor with four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.0GHz. It is compatible with both LPDDR3 and LPDDR4x RAMs and comes with PowerVR GE-class GPU for handling graphics-intensive tasks like gaming and rendering. The company is claiming a 30% faster CPU performance and 72% faster GPU performance when compared with the “direct alternative” which could be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 Mobile Platform.
Since artificial intelligence (AI) is the magic promotional keyword in the mobile market nowadays, MediaTek has also thrown it with the Helio A22 SoC. It is said to feature support for basic AI stuff like face unlock, Smart Photo Album, and “advanced” single/dual camera portrait shots. It further offers compatibility with commonly used AI frameworks and Android Neural Networks API which is something aimed at developers and device makers.
The new processor is already tested in the benchmark Geekbench, in which he scored 830 points and 2400 in single and multi-core modes, respectively, which is not bad for CPU entry level. It may seem that this chip is overclocked MT6739, but this is just a guess – different processor, and the latter produces 660 and 1750 points in the test Geekbench. The company has also added its CorePilot technology to ensure “power-aware scheduling” for better thermal management while maintaining the workload on CPUs depending on the frequency and voltage.
The Helio A22 supports HD+ resolution of up to 1600 x 720 pixels with a maximum aspect ratio of 20:9. The IMG PowerVR GE graphics chip will be able to encode Full HD videos and play the same as a frame rate of 30 fps and not more. Video playback is supported by H.264, H.265 / HEVC codecs. In the camera department, it will work with up to 21-megapixel single shooter and up to 13-megapixel and 8-megapixel dual camera setup. It is further claimed to offer better low-light photography, multi-frame noise reduction, and clear-image zoom technology. Last but not the least, it is compatible with Bluetooth 5 and dual 4G VoLTE connectivity.
Furthermore, the Helio A22 brings Edge AI onboard, although in a rudimentary form. The capabilities will allow for FaceID, smart photo album, and single and dual camera bokeh effects in smartphones. However, MediaTek’s NeuroPilot platform gives developers the ecosystem to leverage the AI capabilities of the chip. The platform is fully compliant with Android Neural Networks API and comes with common AI frameworks. The Helio A22 uses MediaTek’s WorldMode 4G LTE modem that provides 4G dual SIM support with dual VoLTE/ViLTE. There’s also the company’s TAS 2.0 smart antenna tech that optimizes the signal using multiple cameras.

Over its previous generation, the MediaTek Helio A22 now includes multi-GNSS options for multiple GPS standards. It is also 24 percent more power efficient thanks to the onboard sensor hub. There’s also support for Bluetooth 5 for twice the speed and four times the range.
