Memory technologies are constantly changing and accelerating. While it does not look like a cell phone and a GPU, memory is the key to fast mobile phone operation. The performance has improved dramatically since the initial development of memory. Everything pushes for better photography, better gameplay, and machine learning, and it all needs a lot of memory and better memory permeability. New storage technologies are here, and it’s about LPDDR5 RAM or UFS 3.0 storage. It is these standards that are meant to be faster than others.
LPDDR5 RAM
RAM is part of every PC and mobile phone and there is a high sensitivity to memory permeability between CPU, GPU, and increasing AI dependence. Everything is on one chip, and memory with these modules shares one pool. All this is reflected in gaming or 4K recording.
We are still waiting for the final specifications, but LPDDR5, like the previous types of memory, is set to increase throughput and improve energy consumption. LPDDR5 is expected to be 6400 Mbps throughput, which is 100% more than LPDDR4 at 3200 Mbps. However, LPDDR4 also achieved 4266 Mbps throughput.
LPDDR5 has different clocks and this time uses WCKs similar to the fastest GDDRP5 graphics memory. It is precisely the different clocks that result from better performance and faster data transfer. However, LPDDR 5 also confirms ECC ‘s clean and write capabilities, which subsequently allow data recovery even in the event of errors.
However, LPDDR5 also focuses on energy usage, which results in lower operating voltages. There is a deep sleeping mode that reduces the use of electricity by as much as 40%. The LPDDR5 should begin production in the second half of 2018 and will be available in the phones in 2019, so it is possible that the Galaxy S10 will have LPDDR5 available.
UFS 3.0 ROM
Fast storage is just as important as fast RAM, assuming you want to read and store high definition videos or upload high-quality AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) high quality. UFS quickly replaces eMMC memory, which was the standard in modern smartphones. JDEC has just released the official UFS 3.0 specification.
The speed is twice as high as UFS 2.0, which we find on high-end mobile phones. Each part can handle up to 11.6 Gbps data rate, from 5.8 Gbps for UFS 2.0. The data transfer rate was 23.2 Gbps. However, the real speed will be slightly lower than the theoretical maximum. Fortunately, all UFS 3.0 compatible devices need support for HS-G4 (11.6 Gbps) and GS-G3 (5.8 Gbps), making it definitely faster than any UFS 2.0.
The new UFS 3.0 standard is designed for high-capacity storage. Like LPDDR5, Samsung will also be the first to offer this UFS 3.0 storage technology. The automotive industry has already begun implementation, but in 2019 it will also arrive in a mobile phone. As you know, Samsung has the biggest gain of chips, so the development of new technologies such as UFS 3.0 and LPDDR5 is a big priority for Samsung because it sells these chips to other companies they use on their mobile phones.
